background:urinary tract infections (utis) are the most common infectious diseases in childhood. the uropathogenic escherichia coli (upec) strains account for as much as 80% of utis. objective:from a clinical perspective, it is important to know which virulence factors and antibiotic resistance properties are present in upec strains in pediatrics. therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the molecular characterization and antimicrobial resistance of upec strains isolated from hospitalized patients in pediatric ward of baqiyatallah hospital in tehran. patients and methods:one hundred and twenty-one urine specimens were collected from the patients infected with utis (51 boys and 70 girls). the urine samples were cultured immediately, and those with e. coli-positive were analyzed for the presence of antibiotic resistance genes and bacterial virulence factors using polymerase chain reaction (pcr). also, antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using disk diffusion methodology with mueller–hinton agar according to the instruction of clinical laboratory and standard institute. results:nineteen out of 51 (37.25%) urine samples from boys and 47 out of 70 (67.14%) urine samples from girls harbored e. coli. a significant difference was found between the frequency of upec strains in boys and girls (p

Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Molecular Characterization of Escherichia coli Isolated from Food Contact Surfaces in Seafood Pre-Processing Plants (India)

Background: The survival of pathogens in biofilms poses a threat to food safety. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular characterization of Escherichia coli strains. Methods: Swab samples (n=144) were collected from biofilm formed on food contact surfaces in seafood pre-processing plant in India. E. coli was isolated and identified using uid ...

Molecular characterization of uropathogenic and diarrheagenic Escherichia coli pathotypes.

In this study diarrheagenic and uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains were comparatively characterized according to serotype, hemolytic activity, protein polymorphism among housekeeping enzymes, phylogenetic group and urovirulence genes. Intra-serogroup/serotype variations were observed. Hemolytic activity was detected in 100%, 93%, 67% and 39% of UPEC, EAEC, EPEC and ETEC strains, resp...

Virulence characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains.

Eight virulence factors associated with uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) were investigated in 204 clinical isolates of E. coli recovered from urine cultures at counts ≥10(5). The bacteria were classified into two groups according to the number of leukocytes in urine samples from which they were isolated: group I ≤8 leukocytes/hpf, 104 strains; group II >8 leukocytes/hpf, 100 strains....

Antibiotic Resistance Patterns in Enteric and Uropathogenic Strains of Escherichia Coli in Children

Abstract Background and Objective: Escherichia coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections in children and the leading cause of intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis and abscess) followed intestinal injuries. Urinary tract infection, including cystitis and pyelonephritis, is a common childhood infection. E. coli causes more than 90 percent of the community acquired and 50% of ho...

Evaluation of Efflux pump activity among Uropathogenic Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia multiple- Drug Resistance isolates

Antibiotic resistance is a phenomenon in which antibiotic used to treat bacteria becomes useless due to resistance mechanism. Increased drug resistance and occurrence of Multiple Drug Resistance in bacteria specificity nosocomial and Urinary Tract Infection bacteria has reduced the possibilities of treating these infectious diseases. Efflux pumps are one of the major mechanism of MDR in bacteri...
